Best Supplements for Gym Beginners UK 2026 — What to Take First
- 12 May, 2026
Starting the gym is exciting — but the supplement aisle can feel overwhelming. Protein, creatine, pre-workout, BCAAs, fat burners, testosterone boosters... where do you even begin? The honest answer: most beginners don’t need most of it.
This guide cuts through the noise. If you're new to training, here’s exactly what to consider — in order of priority — and what to save your money on until later.
Priority 1: Protein Powder
Protein is the only supplement with genuinely strong evidence for building muscle. If you’re training consistently and not hitting your protein target through food (aim for roughly 1.6–2g per kg of bodyweight per day), a quality whey protein is the single best supplement investment you can make.
For an 80kg person, that’s 128–160g of protein per day — a target that’s genuinely difficult to hit through food alone without a significant calorie surplus. One or two protein shakes per day bridges that gap efficiently.
What to buy: Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey is the benchmark — proven, widely available and excellent in a huge range of flavours. Applied Nutrition Critical Whey delivers one of the highest protein contents per serving and is a brilliant value option. Either will serve you well.
When to take it: Post-workout is the classic timing, but consistency matters more than timing. Take it whenever it fits your day.
Priority 2: Creatine Monohydrate
Creatine is the most researched performance supplement in existence. Decades of peer-reviewed studies consistently show it improves strength, power output and muscle growth — with no meaningful downsides for healthy adults. It’s also cheap, unflavoured and incredibly easy to take.
What to buy: Plain creatine monohydrate. Nothing fancy needed. Optimum Nutrition, Reflex and Applied Nutrition all make solid, affordable products. Take 3–5g daily — no loading phase required. Mix it into your protein shake, squash or a glass of water.
When to take it: Any time of day. Daily consistency matters far more than timing.
Priority 3: Vitamin D & Omega-3
Before you spend money on anything else, it’s worth covering your nutritional bases. The majority of people in the UK are deficient in vitamin D, particularly during autumn and winter months — and deficiency is associated with reduced testosterone, lower mood and impaired recovery. Omega-3 fatty acids support joint health, inflammation management and cardiovascular function.
What to buy: Vitamin D3 (1000–2000IU daily) and a quality omega-3 fish oil. A basic multivitamin is optional but useful if your diet is inconsistent. Browse our vitamins range for options at all price points.
Priority 4: Pre-Workout (Optional)
Pre-workout supplements can genuinely improve energy, focus and performance in the gym — but they’re optional, especially for beginners. If you’re sleeping well, eating enough and training consistently, you don’t need a pre-workout to make excellent progress.
If you do want one, start with a lower-stimulant product and see how your body responds before going stronger. Applied Nutrition ABE, Cellucor C4 and Grenade .50 Calibre are all popular options available in-store. If you’re caffeine-sensitive or train in the evenings, a stim-free pre-workout is a smarter choice.
What Beginners Don’t Need Yet
- BCAAs — If you’re hitting your protein target, you’re already getting plenty of BCAAs. Save the money.
- Fat burners — These work best as a complement to an already solid diet and training programme. They won’t compensate for poor nutrition.
- Testosterone boosters — Not necessary or particularly effective for most healthy adults, especially beginners.
- Elaborate stacks — Nail the basics first. Protein + creatine + consistent training will deliver the vast majority of your results.
